Blooming Color Studio | Blog Post 4: Embrace Your Body This Summer

Ahhhh… the summer is here, and swimsuit season is in full swing! I have always loved the water and spent a lot of time at the beach or pool, growing up in South Florida. Some of my sweetest memories from childhood were shared with my dear father, who taught me how to swim and fish! We regularly spent weekends in the Florida Keys, fishing and swimming, or hanging out at the Yankee Clipper Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, where my uncle worked.
Despite the joy this brought, I was a little chubby and realized that I was different from other girls my age. As much as I loved to swim, I hated wearing a swimsuit. I felt less than, inferior, and possibly even ugly because I was not thin like most of the other girls. I wish someone had told me I was beautiful just the way I was back then.
I struggled with my confidence and self-worth for decades. It took a lot of hard work to recognize that my value came not from what my body looked like but from who I was. Swimsuit shopping, particularly after 50, can feel like a challenge for many women! That journey is exactly why I do what I do now — and why I want to help you find a swimsuit that makes you feel the way I wish I'd felt back then: beautiful, exactly as you are.
Embracing Change and Celebrating Life
As we age, our bodies tend to change. Weight distribution may shift, tummies often get softer, stretch marks appear, and skin shows signs of aging. Ironically, this stage of life can bring so much pleasure. The last thing you want is to sit on the sidelines because you don't feel comfortable in a swimsuit. There is so much to celebrate — becoming an empty nester, a grandparent, or retiring. As you make this shift, consider the happiness and enjoyment that awaits.
It’s time to embrace swimwear that highlights your best features and makes you feel confident. Choosing swimwear that flatters your unique shape and coloring can transform your beach or poolside experience and positively impact your psyche.
Understanding Common Body Types and Swimsuit Styles
Knowing your shape helps you pick suits that work with your figure (the one you have today), not against it. Here are some common body types and swimsuit styles that complement them.
A quick note: some of the links below are Amazon affiliate links, so I may earn a small commission if you shop through them — it doesn't cost you anything extra, and it helps support this little corner of the internet. I've also linked a few non-affiliate favorites (like Lands' End) simply because I love them and think you will too.
Hourglass Shape
The Hourglass Shape has equally balanced hips and thighs and a defined waist. Your goal is simply to honor the waist you already have. Look for:
Wrap styles or belted suits that follow your natural waistline.
Supportive cups and wide straps if you’re fuller busted.
Classic one-pieces cut close through the body — you don’t need a lot of embellishments.

Pear Shape
This shape tends to have fuller hips and thighs, smaller through the shoulders. Your goal is to draw the eye up and create balance on top. Look for:
Bold prints, embellishment, or a bit of ruching across the bust and shoulders.
Halter necklines or wider straps to broaden the shoulder line.
Solid, darker bottoms in a classic boy short or high-waisted bottom to create a nice, smooth line.
A skirted bottom if you want extra ease around the hips.
Apple Shape
The Apple Shape is fuller through the middle and has slimmer legs. Your goal is to define the waist or create the illusion of a more defined waist. Look for:
An empire waist or a suit with shirring/ruching at the midsection — this skims rather than clings.
A V-neckline to elongate the torso.
Tummy-control panels if that’s something you want. Totally optional.
Showing off those legs with a higher-cut leg line.
Rectangle Shape
Rectangle Shapes have very similar measurements for bust, waist, and hips. Your goal is to create curve and visual interest. Look for:
Ruffles, side cutouts, or color-blocking at the waist to create the illusion of a curve.
Bandeau or bralette tops with detail.
A suit with a defined belt or tie at the waist.
Inverted Triangle Shape
The Inverted Triangle shape tends to have broader shoulders and/or a fuller bust, with narrower hips. Your goal is to soften the shoulder line and add a little visual interest below the waist. Look for:
A scoop or V-neck rather than a halter, to minimize shoulder width.
Printed or ruffled bottoms to balance the top.
A softer, less structured top.

A Note for My Fellow Full-Figured Friends
"Plus-size" is not a body shape. Any body shape can be plus-sized. For example, I am a plus-sized Apple and follow guidance for the Apple shape.
Plus-size swimwear has genuinely come a long way — this isn’t the limited rack of sad florals it used to be. A few extra things that make a real difference at any size:
Wide, adjustable straps distribute weight and prevent digging, especially for fuller busts.
Longer torso options matter more than most brands admit — look for “long torso” or “tall” sizing if a one-piece always feels short on you.
Higher-quality Lycra/spandex blends hold their shape wash after wash and are worth paying a little more for.
Don’t be afraid of color and print. Fuller bodies deserve the fun stuff too — you don’t need to only consider the “slimming” black suit. Find the one that makes your face light up!
Fit matters more than size. Try different brands and styles to find what fits your body best.
Now that you know what to look for in fit and coverage, let's talk about the other piece of the puzzle: Color.
The Importance of Color Selection in Swimwear
Color plays a powerful role in how a swimsuit looks and feels. The right color can brighten your complexion, highlight your features, and boost your confidence.
Dark colors like navy, black, and deep green slim and smooth the silhouette.
Bright colors such as coral, turquoise, and fuchsia add energy and draw attention to your favorite areas.
Pastels offer a soft, elegant look, especially when paired with subtle patterns.
Monochrome suits create a lengthening effect, making you appear taller.
Color blocking can emphasize curves or create the illusion of a more balanced figure.
Consider your skin tone when choosing colors. Warm undertones look great in earthy shades like olive, rust, and gold. Cool undertones shine in jewel tones like sapphire, emerald, and amethyst. Not sure what your color code is? Consider having color analysis done. This will be valuable in swimsuit season or out!
Building Confidence Through the Right Swimsuit
Confidence comes from feeling comfortable and beautiful in your swimwear. Here are some tips to help you embrace your swimsuit with pride:
Support is key. Look for suits with built-in bras or adjustable straps for comfort. I am not a fan of underwires, but many brands make supportive suits without the wire. Your girls will thank you!
Cover-ups and accessories can enhance your look and provide extra coverage when desired.
Invest in quality fabrics that hold their shape and resist fading.
Choose styles that reflect your personality. Whether classic, bold, or playful, your swimsuit should feel like you.
Remember, swimwear is not the enemy! Finding a swimsuit that fits and flatters can give you the opportunity to celebrate your body at every stage.
