The Seasonal Closet Reset: My Step-by-Step Process for a New Season

Every time the season shifts, so does my closet. It's one of my favorite rituals — not because I love doing laundry-adjacent chores, but because it's the moment I get to realign my wardrobe with who I actually am right now, not who I was six months ago.

Step 1: Swap Out What's Off-Season

First things first — store what you won't be wearing for the next several months, and bring forward what you will. This alone creates instant breathing room. A closet packed with clothes for every season at once is overwhelming no matter how organized you are.

If your closet feels chaotic every time the weather changes, here's exactly how I approach own seasonal reset — and how you can do the same. Step 2: Evaluate Every Single Piece

This is the heart of the process. As I bring pieces back into rotation, I consider the following for each item:

1. Does it still fit? Bodies change, and that's completely normal — but clothes that don't fit right now just create daily frustration.

2. Does it still flatter me? Fit and flattery aren't the same thing. A piece can technically fit and still not do you any favors in cut, color, or silhouette.

3. Is it in good repair? Pilling, stretched-out necklines, and permanent stains don't belong in a wardrobe you want to feel confident in.

4. Does it still feel like me? Style evolves. A piece that once felt exciting can start to feel disconnected from how you actually want to show up in the world.

Any piece that gets a "no" goes into the out pile — no guilt required.

Step 3: Build Your Shopping List

Once I know what's staying, I look at the gaps. What did I reach for constantly last season that's now worn out? What's missing that would make outfits easier to put together? This becomes an intentional shopping list — not an impulse one — so anything I bring in this season actually earns its place.

Step 4: Decide Where the "No" Pile Goes

This is where a lot of women get stuck. Here are my two favorite ways to move pieces out responsibly:

Consign It Locally

Consignment stores can be a great way to get some cash back for gently worn clothing, shoes, bags and accessories. I love bringing quality pieces to Kelly's Kloset. It is a wonderful local consignment store and they always have a great variety of things to browse and shop. If you are in the DfW area, check them out. https://kellysconsignments.com/. Trashie — My New Favorite Way to Let Go

For everything else — worn-out basics, pieces past their prime, items that aren't consignment-quality — I've started using a service called Trashie, and I honestly can't recommend it enough.

Here's how it works: Trashie sends you Take Back Bags. You fill each with clothing, shoes, or accessories, jewelry, etc., regardless of brand or condition — and ship it back to them completely postage paid. Even better, you actually earn cash rewards for every bag you send in. To get started with them, you select the plan you like best, a single bag, specific number of bags or the Unlimited Plan, the one I chose. This plan is $48 for one year. They send you as many prepaid bags as you need. With the rewards, you get for each bag sent, you will break even once you send 10 bags back. You might wonder if you have enough to make it worthwhile. Only you can decide that but you will be surprised at how many types of items they accept (includes any textiles even if not clothing). For me, it was a no brainer.

What I love most is that it solves the guilt of throwing clothes away. Instead of items ending up in a landfill, Trashie works to responsibly recycle or repurpose them. It's an easy, feel-good way to clear out your closet and get something back for doing it.

Feeling Overwhelmed? You Don't Have to Do This Alone

I'll be honest — even with a system, a full seasonal reset can feel like a lot, especially if it's been a while since your closet got real attention. That's exactly why I became a Certified 27 Hanger Closet Coach — to help women simplify this process instead of white-knuckling it alone.

If your closet feels more overwhelming than exciting right now, I'd love to help. Learn more about my closet coaching services here

A closet that reflects who you are today — fitting well, flattering you, and fully repaired — makes every single morning easier. That's worth the reset.
